Industry Knowledge: AI Governance in Health Care

Nashville is the undisputed epicenter of the US health-care industry, generating more than $92 billion in annual revenues and housing over 900 health-care companies. At the heart of this ecosystem is HCA Healthcare, often referred to as the “Google of Health Care,” having directly or indirectly spun off hundreds of new companies. With this unparalleled concentration of health-care decision-making power, Nashville has a unique opportunity to define how artificial intelligence (AI) transforms health care.

AI is poised to become the most disruptive force in health care, capable of improving health outcomes, reducing costs, minimizing errors, and improving workforce productivity. As tech leader Nora Denzel, lead director for Advanced Micro Devices Inc. and director for NACD and Gen Digital Inc. (previously NortonLifeLock), aptly put it, “AI is a weapon of mass disruption.” The question is not if AI will transform health care, but how—and whether governance structures are prepared to keep pace.

This high-impact session is for health-care board members and executives as they tackle the governance challenges and opportunities AI presents.

Drawing from insights from the NACD Blue Ribbon Commission on Technology Leadership in the Boardroom, this session will help leaders:

  • Discuss key trends shaping the health-care sector and the impact on AI oversight, risk management, and innovation
  • Review governance best practices and board-specific structures for AI oversight, including committee composition, governance models, and responses to heightened Caremark obligations
  • Explore practical AI ethical considerations, including real-world challenges and an introduction to the Harvard AI Ethics Boundaries of Tolerance Framework, a groundbreaking approach to AI decision-making
  • Understand the evolving AI regulatory landscape and anticipate key compliance challenges impacting health-care organizations
  • Discuss strategic decision-making frameworks that empower boards to navigate AI disruption while ensuring accountability and trust

AI is not just another technological advancement—it is a paradigm shift. The health-care industry in Nashville has the opportunity—and responsibility—to lead this transformation responsibly. Will boardrooms be drivers of innovation or reactionary risk managers? The decisions made today will shape the future of health-care AI governance.

This event will equip board leaders with actionable strategies to embrace AI ethically, strategically, and effectively, ensuring their organizations remain at the forefront of health-care transformation.
